Instagram’s New Automatic Translation Feature
Instagram, owned by Facebook, has introduced a new feature that automatically translates text in story posts, making it easier for users to engage with content in different languages.
Introduction of the Translation Option
When Instagram detects text in a foreign language within a story post, it will now offer a “See Translation” option at the top left corner of the screen. Users can simply tap on this option to view the translated text displayed at the bottom of the screen.
Global Availability and Language Support
This new translation feature will be available worldwide, aiming to facilitate content sharing with an international audience. Currently, Instagram supports translation for over 90 languages, enhancing accessibility and inclusivity on the platform.
Parity with Traditional Posts
Instagram’s introduction of automatic translation for stories brings it in line with its existing translation feature for comments, captions, and user bios. Previously, stories lacked this functionality, despite it being available for other types of posts. With this update, Instagram aims to ensure consistency across all content formats.
Limitations and Future Development
While the new feature enables text translation, Instagram clarified that audio translation is not yet supported. However, the platform may explore adding this functionality in the future to further enhance user experience.
Other Recent Developments
In addition to the translation feature, Instagram has been testing a collaborative feature called ‘Collab’ in India. This feature allows users to invite collaborators to participate in creating feed posts and reels. If accepted, collaborators are credited as authors, and the content is shared to their profile grid and followers’ feeds. This collaborative tool aims to foster creative partnerships and expand content reach on the platform.
