Kharposhteh Apartment: Reviving the Rooftop Culture

The Kharposhteh Apartment, crafted by SE-BÆR Studio, seeks to revive the once-vibrant rooftop culture that has gradually faded into obscurity. Situated in the historic district of Isfahan, this project breathes new life into a two-story lodge, nestled south of the Abbasi Jame Mosque and Naqsh Jahan Square.

Rediscovering Rooftop Heritage

Roofs were once integral parts of homes and cities, serving as multifunctional spaces for various activities, from social gatherings to keeping pigeons. However, in modern times, these spaces have been neglected, relegated to housing utility fixtures and storage. With the rich historical backdrop of Isfahan, the project poses a poignant question: how can we reclaim and reimagine these abandoned spaces in a contemporary context?

The Concept of Roof City

In response to the challenge, the Kharposhteh Apartment emerges as a prototype for the revitalization of forgotten rooftop spaces. Amidst the trend of replacing traditional homes with impersonal multi-unit apartments, this project stands as a beacon of adaptive reuse. It presents a vision for a cohesive “Roof City,” where urban landscapes are layered and interconnected, paying homage to the city’s rich architectural heritage.

Innovative Design Solutions

The transformation begins with the loft, which is reimagined as a welcoming guest residence. By removing unnecessary fixtures and reorganizing the space, the loft is optimized for comfort and functionality. Cantilevering the ceiling and installing expansive windows create a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor spaces, maximizing views and connectivity. Furthermore, thoughtful adjustments to the staircase and landing areas enhance the overall spatial experience, inviting serendipitous encounters and interactions.

Blending Tradition with Innovation

Every design detail reflects a delicate balance between honoring tradition and embracing innovation. From the choice of materials to the layout of walls and floors, the design pays homage to Isfahan’s rich architectural heritage while introducing modern elements to create a harmonious fusion of old and new.

The Kharposhteh Apartment stands as a testament to the transformative power of architecture in reclaiming and revitalizing forgotten spaces. It embodies a vision of urban renewal that celebrates heritage, fosters community, and inspires creativity in the heart of Isfahan.
