Netflix has launched Spatial Audio support for iPhones and iPads, enhancing the streaming experience by providing immersive surround sound capabilities without any additional charges. This new feature allows users to enjoy directional audio filters for a more engaging audio experience.

What is Spatial Audio?

Spatial Audio is a technology implemented by Apple that simulates surround sound. It enables compatible headphones, such as AirPods Pro and AirPods Max, to track head movements or device orientation, directing sound accordingly and adjusting frequencies for each ear. This functionality is made possible by the gyroscope and accelerometer sensors present in AirPods Pro and Max.

How to Access Spatial Audio on Netflix

Users with iPhones and iPads running iOS 14 or later can enable Spatial Audio while using the Netflix app. This feature can be activated directly from the Control Center. However, it’s important to note that Spatial Audio support is currently limited to AirPods Pro and AirPods Max.

Availability and Compatibility

The rollout of Spatial Audio support on Netflix has been confirmed by the streaming giant, with reports initially surfacing on Reddit. Users who meet the eligibility criteria – owning compatible iPhones or iPads and AirPods Pro or AirPods Max – can start enjoying this feature on Netflix immediately. Ensure that your Netflix app is updated to the latest version to access Spatial Audio. For users who haven’t received the update yet, Netflix is gradually rolling out this feature, so patience may be required.

Spatial Audio vs. Other Surround Sound Technologies

While Spatial Audio enhances the streaming experience on Apple devices, it’s essential to recognize that it’s not the only implementation of surround sound technology. Sony, for instance, offers its own version known as 360 Reality Audio, which has been available for some time. Additionally, iOS 15 introduces the Spatialise Stereo option, further enhancing surround sound capabilities even for non-Dolby Atmos content.

Netflix’s introduction of Spatial Audio support underscores its commitment to providing users with innovative and immersive viewing experiences, enhancing the overall enjoyment of its content on compatible devices.
