Instagram’s Birthday Verification Initiative
Instagram is implementing a new policy requiring users to provide their birthdays upon opening the app, targeting those who haven’t previously entered this information. This move is part of Instagram’s ongoing efforts to enhance safety measures, particularly for younger users.
Purpose of Birthday Verification
Upon opening the Instagram app, users who haven’t provided their birthdays will be prompted to do so. This data collection initiative is geared towards developing new features tailored to different age groups. Users can manually update their birthday information through the ‘edit profile’ section within the app.
Addressing Age Verification Challenges
While gathering birthdays seems straightforward, Instagram acknowledges the challenge of ensuring accurate user-provided information. To tackle this issue, Instagram plans to leverage artificial intelligence (AI) to estimate users’ ages based on various factors, including interactions such as “Happy Birthday” posts. Users who claim to be above a certain age but are flagged by Instagram as potentially younger may be required to verify their age through a selection of options.
Birthday Requirement for Accessing Sensitive Content
In addition to prompting users for their birthdays upon app opening, Instagram will also request this information when attempting to view sensitive posts. This applies to users who haven’t previously provided their birthdays. Last month, Instagram introduced enhanced controls for sensitive content, allowing users to adjust their preferences to see more or less of such content. By default, Instagram limits the visibility of sensitive posts, but users now have the option to further restrict their exposure to such content.
Instagram’s implementation of birthday verification marks another step towards creating a safer and more tailored user experience on the platform, prioritizing the well-being and privacy of its diverse user base.
