Preserving Time: Revitalizing the Flat in Kitashirakawa

Nestled in the historic city of Kyoto, the Flat in Kitashirakawa project by IN STUDIO embodies a unique blend of tradition and modernity. The architects embarked on a journey to renovate a 160m2 apartment in the northern region of Kyoto, drawing inspiration from the city’s rich cultural heritage and timeless allure.

Embracing Kyoto’s Legacy

Kyoto, with its ancient topography and layered history, served as the perfect backdrop for the renovation project. Surrounded by mountains and steeped in centuries of tradition, the city’s architectural landscape reflects a seamless integration of past and present. The architects sought to mirror this harmony within the confines of the apartment, paying homage to Kyoto’s storied past while embracing the demands of contemporary living.

A Dialogue Between Old and New

The renovation process was guided by a philosophy of juxtaposition, where old and new elements coexist in harmony. Rather than erasing the traces of time, the architects chose to celebrate them, integrating 30-year-old concrete surfaces with sleek, modern materials. The result is a space that exudes a sense of history and permanence, while also embracing the vibrancy of the present.

Crafting a Timeless Interior

Plywood furniture and tatami mats lend warmth and character to the interior, evoking a sense of nostalgia for bygone eras. Meanwhile, sliding doors and fittings salvaged from older structures infuse the space with a sense of authenticity and charm. The architects intentionally left behind remnants of the past, incorporating them into the design to create a seamless transition between past and present.

Bridging Past and Present

The Flat in Kitashirakawa serves as a testament to the enduring legacy of Kyoto. By preserving elements of the city’s rich architectural heritage, the architects have created a space that transcends time, inviting inhabitants to connect with the past while embracing the possibilities of the future. Through thoughtful design and careful curation, the apartment serves as a living testament to the timeless allure of Kyoto.
