Hankou Junior High School Library: Transforming Tradition

Located within the Hankou junior school campus, the library stands as a testament to innovation and transformation. Unlike traditional school libraries, this space challenges norms and redefines the role of libraries in educational settings.

Designing an Open Space

Situated on the second floor of a 30-year-old classroom building, the library initially resembled a storage room rather than a space for exploration and learning. The architects at TALI DESIGN sought to reverse this perception by embracing the concept of an “Open Library.” By removing window sills and introducing glass walls, the design floods the space with natural light and opens up panoramic views of the surrounding forest, transforming the library into an inviting and expansive environment.

Embracing Nature

Central to the library’s layout is the idea of “Placing A Forest.” Irregular curved shelves mimic the organic forms found in nature, while the aisles meander like pathways through a forest. These shelves not only house a wealth of knowledge but also create dynamic and engaging reading spaces. Additionally, the design extends the reading experience outdoors, with bar reading tables positioned along the corridor, offering students the opportunity to immerse themselves in nature while exploring the world of literature.

Aesthetic Harmony

In terms of aesthetics, the library embraces a minimalist approach with white as the predominant color scheme. The Arauco plywood shelves add warmth and texture to the space, creating a harmonious blend of functionality and aesthetics. Reclaimed aluminum latticed windows adorn the ceiling, casting dappled light reminiscent of sunlight filtering through a canopy of leaves.

A Window to the World

Despite its modest size, the Hankou Junior High School Library serves as a gateway to knowledge and exploration for students. By reimagining the traditional library as a dynamic and engaging space, TALI DESIGN has created an environment that inspires curiosity and encourages students to open the window to the world beyond the classroom.
