Embracing Tranquility: House in Sakai by FujiwaraMuro Architects

Situated near a bustling intersection plagued by noise and vibrations from passing trucks, the House in Sakai presented a unique challenge for FujiwaraMuro Architects. Despite the unfavorable conditions, the clients, a family of four, were determined to build their home on this inherited lot, nestled amidst towering commercial buildings.

Creating Enclosed Depth

Faced with the task of shielding the house from external disturbances, the architects opted to enclose the space, providing a sanctuary from the chaotic surroundings. However, they sought to imbue the interior with a sense of depth and openness. Leveraging natural light, they introduced subtle variations, inflecting the space with modulations that created a dynamic environment within the confines of the enclosure.

Transformative Light

Using strategic placement of walls, the architects orchestrated the play of light, casting moving patterns that blurred the boundaries between spaces. Rather than rigid divisions, the walls became conduits for transitional zones, where the interplay of light and shadow lent a sense of fluidity to the interior. This fluctuation of light created an illusion of gentle undulation, imparting a serene ambiance throughout the house.

Strategic Buffering

To mitigate the impact of external noise, certain rooms such as the laundry room, entryway, and bathroom were strategically positioned to act as sound buffers. Intermediary spaces like the sunroom and miniature courtyard served as conduits, allowing elements of the exterior environment to filter into the house while maintaining a sense of distance from the bustling streets outside.

Harmony with Nature

Despite its closed-off nature, the House in Sakai seamlessly integrated elements of the outside world, particularly natural light, into its design. By embracing the surrounding environment in a peaceful manner, the architects achieved a space that exudes depth and tranquility, offering respite from the urban hustle and bustle while remaining connected to the world outside.

In the House in Sakai, FujiwaraMuro Architects have masterfully crafted a sanctuary that harmonizes with its surroundings, creating a haven of calm amidst the chaos of urban life.
