Sam Bankman-Fried, despite his current legal troubles, is reportedly sharing cryptocurrency investment advice and promoting Solana investments to prison guards, as reported by The New York Times.
Crypto Advice Behind Bars
According to The Times’ report citing an unnamed source, Bankman-Fried, who has been detained at Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Center since August, is engaging in discussions about crypto investments with prison guards.
Challenges in Prison
Bankman-Fried faces challenges in prison, including limited access to the internet, which is critical for someone deeply involved in the crypto world. Author Michael Lewis expressed concerns about Bankman-Fried’s ability to cope without a constant stream of information, highlighting potential mental strain.
Support and Pleas for Leniency
Bankman-Fried’s parents, Joseph Bankman and Barbara Fried, have appealed to the court for leniency, citing fears for their son’s safety in prison. Fried emphasized Sam’s vulnerability due to his social cues comprehension and belief in factual reasoning.
Legal Battle and Sentencing
In November, Bankman-Fried was found guilty on several counts of fraud and conspiracy. His sentencing, scheduled for March 28, could result in a lengthy prison term of up to 110 years. However, his attorney, Marc Mukasey, argued for a much shorter sentence of five to six-and-a-half years.
Advocating for a Fair Sentence
Mukasey emphasized that sentencing Bankman-Fried to a 100-year term would be extreme and advocated for a sentence that would allow him to reintegrate into society promptly.
Despite requests for comment, representatives for Bankman-Fried declined to address The Times’ report.
