Indian Spacetech Startups: Soaring to New Heights

The Indian spacetech sector is experiencing rapid growth, positioning itself for a significant lift-off in the near future, according to insights shared by Clint Crosier, Director of Aerospace and Satellite at AWS. The burgeoning space economy in India is currently valued at approximately Rs 6,700 crore ($8.4 billion), representing a 2 per cent share in the global space economy.

Accelerated Growth Trajectory

Forecasts from the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) suggest that by 2033, India’s space economy could surge to Rs 35,200 crore ($44 billion), capturing nearly 8 per cent of the global space economy. Crosier expressed his optimism during the ‘AWS re: Invent 2023’ conference, highlighting the remarkable rise in space startups within India over the past year.

Enabling Factors and Collaborations

The conducive environment for spacetech innovation in India stems from supportive government policies, increased investments, and a strategic aim to amplify the country’s global space industry share by fourfold. In a significant development, AWS inked a strategic memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) and IN-SPACe, focusing on leveraging cloud computing to propel space-tech innovations.

Shalini Kapoor, Director and Chief Technologist, Public Sector, AWS India and South Asia, emphasized the collaborative efforts aimed at empowering space startups, research institutions, and students through advanced cloud technologies. Crosier highlighted AWS’s commitment to supporting a broad spectrum of stakeholders, from startups to government bodies, in enhancing their space capabilities. Notable collaborations include working with SatSure in India, leveraging space-based data and geospatial analytics to aid climate management decisions within the government.

India’s spacetech landscape features promising ventures like Skyroot Aerospace, Dhruva Space, and Pixxel, actively collaborating with ISRO and benefiting from the government’s initiatives to open up the space sector for private players. The collaboration between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Joe Biden also underscores the potential for enhanced commercial collaboration in the space economy.
