Le Kawan House: A Modern Twist on Traditional Javanese Architecture

Nestled amidst a lush forest backdrop lies Le Kawan House, a stunning fusion of traditional Javanese architecture and contemporary design, meticulously crafted by W+M Design Studio. Inspired by the family’s cherished traditional house, known as ‘Joglo,’ which stood as a symbol of heritage and culture, the architects embarked on a journey to create additional living spaces that seamlessly complemented the existing structure while adding a modern touch.

Architectural Harmony

The Joglo, with its distinctive architectural elements characterized by slim wooden columns defining open living spaces and massive stone walls enclosing private rooms, served as the guiding inspiration for the new buildings. Embracing the existing materials of wood, sandstone, terrazzo, and colored cement tiles, the architects incorporated these elements into the design palette, infusing the new structures with a sense of continuity and harmony.

Innovative Design

The new buildings, comprising the Pavilion, Bungalow, and Staff Quarter, were meticulously crafted to fulfill distinct functions while maintaining architectural cohesion. The Pavilion, intricately attached to the Joglo, serves as an extension of the indoor living space, seamlessly blending with its surroundings. In contrast, the Bungalow, strategically positioned for privacy, offers an independent living space suitable for guests, complete with modern amenities and comforts.

Contemporary Elegance

The design of the Pavilion facade echoes the horizontal proportions and rhythmic columns of the Joglo, with a cantilevered terrace extending over the garden, adding a contemporary flair to the traditional setting. Similarly, the Bungalow, nestled into the sloped landscape, boasts a roof garden that seamlessly integrates with the natural surroundings, creating a harmonious extension of the landscape.

Embracing Tradition

Even in the bathroom spaces, the architects paid homage to the Joglo’s heritage by incorporating vibrant-colored cement tiles, muted terrazzo flooring, and wooden louvers, creating a sense of nostalgia while ensuring modern functionality and comfort.

Le Kawan House stands as a testament to the seamless integration of tradition and innovation, where architectural heritage meets contemporary elegance in perfect harmony. As residents and guests immerse themselves in its tranquil surroundings, they are greeted by a timeless yet modern retreat, celebrating the rich cultural tapestry of Java.
