Kobe Hyogo House: Embracing Tradition and Memories

The Kobe Hyogo House, designed by YYA / Yusuke Yoshino Architects, embodies a unique blend of tradition, memories, and modernity. Situated in the quaint neighborhood of Seishin-Chuo in Kobe City, the project breathes new life into a neglected childhood home, evoking a sense of nostalgia and belonging.

Rediscovering Roots

Nestled amidst the serene surroundings of Seishin-Chuo, the site of the Kobe Hyogo House exudes a tranquil charm reminiscent of rural landscapes. The client’s childhood home, long vacant and neglected, became the canvas for a transformative renovation project aimed at reviving its former glory.

Reimagining Architecture

From the outset, the architects sought to honor the client’s unique essence by infusing the project with elements inspired by their roots and memories. The exterior’s unusual light green walls served as a catalyst for creativity, reminiscent of the emerald-green ocean of Okinawa, the client’s wife’s hometown. With this inspiration, the project aimed to create architecture rooted in personal history and cultural heritage.

Towada Stone: A Tribute to Tradition

Central to the renovation was the incorporation of Towada stone, a material with exceptional properties symbolizing resilience and longevity. Traditionally used in bathrooms, Towada stone took center stage in the Kobe Hyogo House, serving as a testament to the enduring bond between past and present. The stone’s porous texture and natural allure created a sense of authenticity, reminiscent of a stone quarry where traces of human craftsmanship endure.

Seamless Integration of Interior and Exterior

The design seamlessly integrates interior and exterior spaces, blurring the boundaries between inside and outside. The terrace floor, crafted from Towada stone, extends seamlessly from the interior, while the ricin finish of the exterior walls adorns the interior ceiling and long walls. This continuity creates a sense of visual spaciousness, transcending the physical confines of the space.

A Legacy for Generations to Come

Beyond aesthetics, the Kobe Hyogo House is envisioned as a legacy to be cherished by future generations. Through the reuse of materials and the infusion of memories into its walls, the renovated home embodies the spirit of continuity and tradition. It is a testament to the enduring power of architecture to evoke emotions, preserve memories, and transcend time.

As the Kobe Hyogo House stands as a beacon of architectural innovation and cultural preservation, it serves as a reminder of the importance of honoring our roots and embracing the essence of our past in shaping the future.
