Karlavägen Apartment: A Blend of Elegance and Functionality

The Karlavägen Apartment Renovation, spearheaded by Spring Arkitektkontor, aimed to create a sophisticated yet welcoming home for a couple with a teenage daughter, ensuring the ability to entertain guests while preserving privacy. Situated in central Stockholm, this 230 square meter apartment seamlessly merges two smaller units within a historic building from the early 20th century.

Reimagined Layout

Central to the renovation was the relocation of the kitchen to a more central position, fostering connectivity between the kitchen, living room, and dining area. Guests are welcomed into the living and dining spaces through a centrally located inner hallway, facilitating easy access while maintaining privacy. Meanwhile, the private quarters are strategically positioned at opposite ends of the apartment.

Thoughtful Design Elements

A paneled hidden door leads to a curved hallway adorned with wardrobes, creating a tunnel-like passage that guides inhabitants to the master bedroom and the mother’s expansive walk-in closet and bath. The design ingeniously utilizes curved walls and built-in sliding doors to optimize space in narrow areas. The teenage daughter enjoys her own dedicated section, complete with a bedroom, living area, bath, and walk-in closet.

Understated Elegance

The interior exudes a sense of understated luxury and relaxation. Custom-made fixed furniture harmonizes with the apartment’s original palette of oak and green marble sourced from nearby Kolmården. While the cabinets in the inner hallway pay homage to the apartment’s heritage, the remaining carpentry features a contemporary design language, striking a balance between tradition and modernity.

In addition to bespoke fixed furniture, the project incorporates loose furnishings such as custom-made pieces, carpets, and curtains. A palette of various shades of gray adorns the walls and ceiling, providing a serene backdrop for colorful accents and personal touches, fostering a tranquil ambiance throughout the space.
